This course is suitable for all childcare professionals at every professional level. It addresses the key issues that have emerged from Serious Case Reviews. It aims to develop more confidence in professional assessments and observations, with a view to taking practices to a higher level.
Professional dangerousness can occur within the practices of individual workers, within teams of professionals, within entire departments or between agencies. Often professional dangerousness occurs as a direct response to the actions of families where there are childcare concerns, as a result of our own discomfort within our role, or when workers who are responsible for child protection leave the child at risk of significant harm as a result of their assumptions, attitudes or behaviours.
Course Objectives:
- Raise awareness of the outcomes and lessons learnt from major child protection enquiries.
- Provide structured time for reflection, exploration and planning around safeguarding practices.
- Develop learning through a range of presentations, case studies, and small & large group discussions.
- Enable participants to explore and become more in touch with aspects of their own practice and the practices of other professionals within a safe learning environment.
- Recognise dangerousness when it occurs in a range of settings and work on strategies to challenge dangerous practices.
- Recognise the impact stress, anxiety and abuse has on the child's development and behaviour.
- Address the way families react when child abuse is on our agenda and how their behaviour affects professional responses and decisions.
- Raise professionals' confidence when working with child protection issues and be able to identify when workers are acting dangerously.
- Help professionals gain the necessary knowledge and skills to feel more comfortable and confident when challenging the professionalism of others, which can include other professionals within the same agency and team, as well other professionals involved in the case.
Target Audience: This two-day course is offered to all childcare professionals (both practitioners and managers) within Children's Social Care, Early Help, Early Years, SEND, Virtual School and Youth Offending teams who work with children and families

- Refreshments: Tea, coffee, water and biscuits are available on this course but meals are not provided.
