Social Work Students

The Social Work department for students provides the necessary support and resources to enable students to have the best practice learning experiences whilst in their placements and at university.

  • We provide up to 12 final year 100-day placements across Children’s Services annually for students on the BA and MA qualifying social work courses at Bournemouth University as well as our hosted Step Up students and our Trainee Social Workers on the Social Work Degree Apprenticeship.
  • We also support some 70 day first placements in across Children's Services
  • We provide mentoring groups for our Placement Supervisors and Practice Educators in the teams who have students and provide training and support for ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Practice Education.
  • We provide mentoring groups for each cohort of students on placement by our professionally qualified academy team

Following changes to working practices across BCP Council, with less office based and more remote working, we are looking at creative ways to increase support for students and their learning from experienced practitioners.

Student will have access to our updated induction programme and a Professional Development Officer who will work with their University Tutor and Practice Educator to provide any additional support where required.

As part of the Pan-Dorset and Wiltshire Social Work Teaching Partnership, students also benefit from increased practitioner input to their academic teaching modules at Bournemouth University and additional learning opportunities such as online master classes.

We value the contribution students can make to the whole team and we welcome applications from final year students as part of our recruitment process for our competitive  Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) programme.
